Our plant pick of the month is Franklinia, which was named in honor of Benjamin Franklin.

Franklinia
It was discovered in 1765 by a botanist John Bartram and is now considered extinct in the wild. Bartram named the tree after Benjamin Franklin. All Franklinia trees of today are direct descendants of the trees from Bartram’s Garden in Philadelphia. This understory tree has fragrant white flowers with yellow centers that bloom in late summer to early fall. Its glossy green leaves turn red and purple in the fall. This tree grows to 15’ tall and wide and likes full sun to part shade with well drained soil. It is great for a specimen plant or in a woodland garden.
